Here is what our students say:

“I came to Saint Norbert College in June (2006). When I just came here, I did not have any ideas about St. Norbert College. I was afraid that I could not adapt myself to the new conditions. After two months, I love everything and everyone here. I have many unforgettable memories... students_wall

“First, St. Norbert College’s ESL course is worth to join. We have different classes to enhance our English ability. I learn how to write the essay in writing class. Although I cannot write a good essay, my teacher, Jana, teaches us the writing skill very good. I think I have progress in writing. My reading and speaking teacher is Amy. In this class I improved my reading speed faster and speak English fluently. All teachers plan the perfect teaching schedule.

“Second, ESL has many different activities everyday. I never feel bored here. From those activities, I can know more American cultures….

“Finally, I like our cafeteria. I do not know how many weight I have increased here because I can eat many different American or other countries food in the the cafeteria. Every time I go to the cafeteria, I always eat too much…

“In conclusion, I really love St. Norbert College. I hope I can spend more time here. In many different ways, I learn many things and knowledge. Thanks for everything and everyone I know here.”

bowling “Soon I will finish my summer session. I learned a lot of things from class, from tutor, from live in the dorm, and from homework. But the most interesting part of all is speech class. Speech class is very helpful. It not only help me practice my English speaking, it also helps my English writing, reading, and listening, and it is really fun. First, before I chose a topic for my speech, I read a lot of information from books or internet for my topic, then I summarized (what) I thought (were) the most most interesting parts and wrote my speech. After that I practiced over and over again. I speak it to the tutor, my classmate, and to myself. I also found some interesting aids to help other students to understand my speech, such as map, picture, drawing, and anything I can bring in class. At last, when I would speak my speech in class, I also listening other students’ speech. They have a lot of different topics and all of these speeches were interesting. So the speech is my favorite work in summer session.”

            Belinda Zhao, China

“This summer vacation, my parents gave me a chance to come to America. I came here for study and have fun for two months. I like the time I had here. There were a lot of interesting and special experiences. For example, for the first time I washed all of my clothes with my friends by ourselves. We needed to wake friends up; we did homework with friends all afternoon, and lived in the dorm with friends. I love the life here. I love all of the activities that we enjoyed. And I experienced how are American’s teaching ways. It’s very different from Taiwan. There were a lot of activities I have never done before. For example, we played soccer like a real game, cooked out, took the city bus to the mall, etc. I will miss the life I had here for two months.”

linda_wanless “I came to De Pere one month ago. My Mexican friend studied at St. Norbert College ESL program; he recommended the ESL program. He told me about the kind and able instructors, available tutors, conversation partners, and so on…

“Where I arrived first was Green Bay Airport. Linda picked me up at the airport. She is my advisor of ESL Institute. We talked about De Pere and the ESL program while she drove to St. Norbert College. After we arrived at campus, we went to dormitory. The Resident Assistant (RA) welcomed me warmly. He already knew my English name and I was surprised about that…

“St. Norbert College has a good environment to study English. Instructors have very enthusiastic mind. Tutors help with assignments. Although conversation partner was not offered in this summer semester, I am satisfied with SNC-ESL program.”

            Shane Seo, Korea

“I am very grateful to St. Norbert College and its ESL program. It has allowed me to have more confidence in English, and it has helped me to adjust to my new American environment. I felt very welcome and comfortable. It’s like a family, with a staff very attentive to your particular needs. Thank you and God bless you.

campus_center “Throughout the summer session, I learned a lot of things:   American cultures, habits, food, and so on. Of course I learned English and I think I especially learned… like grammar, pronunciation, accent, listening, and speaking. Also this college’s activities were so interesting. We went to amusement park where was called water park. There are many rides and attractions. We had a great time. St. Norbert College has many great teacher and instructor: Linda, Kay, Olga, Christina, and so on. Thanks to yo my English make more improve. So, I’m glad to go to this college. Thank you.”

            Akinari Ohta, Japan

“Three months ago, I came from New York to St. Norbert College in order to study English. When I got off the airplane, what I saw was a huge field and farms all around. Suddenly, I realized there may be no outdoor activities for me. Several days later, I had a fixed schedule.

“During the week, we have writing, reading, and speaking classes in the morning. We have to get up at 7 o’clock and then go to classes to begin our study until noon. The teacher in my writing and reading classes is Jana. She is very kind teacher because sometimes we forget to do our homework, and she seldom blames us. Sometimes she gives us so much homework that we may want to be lazy. My speaking teacher, Barbara Hanson, is also a nice teacher. She asks us to make a presentation one time each week. It is still very hard to prepare the presentation for Hanson’s class. Therefore, I always use much of my time to prepare my presentation at night.

Wang's baseball

“Second, there is also a fixed schedule for me to watch Wang’s b baseball game. Every five days, he may have to pitch whether in Yankee Stadium or in other team’s stadium. I always stay in front of the television to watch his baseball game. We prepare beers and cookies and talk about his nice pitching. Most Taiwanese are crazy for baseball game because of Wang.

shopping “Finally, Linda always prepares a lot of activities for us to join. For example, we went to the Outlet Mall last week. There are so many brands and so many things to buy and everybody complains that they couldn’t carry so many things back to Taiwan. Therefore, we always have fun in joining these activities.”

            Kyle Chen, Taiwan

“I really have a great time at Saint Norbert College. The ESL classes are very interesting, and we have some exciting trips. If you decide to study at ESL Institute of SNC, I want to give a piece of advice – use the tutoring service! It’s extremely helpful and it’s free!!!

            Shuai Zheng, China

“I like to study here.   I study with students from different countries. It is very good experience for me. Classes are very interesting. I can speak with American people (tutors) after classes. I’m glad that I study here.”

            Irina Zinnurova, Russia

“I have been staying here one month. So I have many new friends… Sometimes I lonely because no any other Mongolia student here. Only me from Mongolia. But I like my new friends. They are always helped me when I had problem…. I like Wisconsin’s weather because it is similar Mongolian weather. But I always miss my family and my friends. Often I feel sad because sometimes I had problem so I can’t express myself to my new friends…”

            U. Namdag, Mongolia

“This summer class will pass, but I’m not leaving. I will stay here for long time. I don’t have to say good-bye to everyone….

            Rain Chen, China

“….Everything here is the best memory for me. I love the people here. When I walked on the street, everyone will say “Hello!” even though they didn’t know me. I think this is very fragrant. In my own country, if I say “Hi” to a stranger, he must think I’m very strange. “I don’t know you, why you said hello to me?”

            Ophelia Wu, Taiwan

sidewalk_art “During these two months, I made lots of friends here. There are people from Mexico, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, America, etc. I will cherish our friendship forever. I also cherish the time here. It’s really good memories.”

            Kathleen Lin, Taiwan

“I learned new things like different ways to communicate with people from other countries. It was difficult to understand them at first, but for me it was ok. I love challenges. With some help I learned how to understand what they said. It was helpful to study with people from China, Japan, Korea, Germany, Mongolia, etc.”

            Catherine Salinas, Peru

“….I love this wonderful place. I made a lot of friends from Japan, Korea, Mexico, China, Thailand, and also from people from Taiwan. I learn about their cultures, foods, languages, and some manners. I am going to miss you after I leave…I’ll keep you in my heart forever. Thanks for being my friends.

“I came here to practice my English and travel. Now, I’m not afraid of speaking English, and I hope that I can come back to SNC again. When I go home, I will tell my friends, what a nice place that I went to for this summer vacation.”

            Jamie Wu, Taiwan

“This summer was the best since I moved to USA. Every day I had new experiences. The people around me was so nice and they always share what they have. It is so amazing how everybody is different but with the same ideology.

“Every day I learned how to study. For me was so hard because I wasn’t used to do it, but with time I learned. I learned to don’t stay up late because the next day I will be tired. The best part of studying was when I learned to have responsibilities: to come early to class, to do my homework every day, and share with other people my knowledge.”

            Erika Sanchez, Mexico

ice_skating “I came here for learning English… The people that I have to thank are both my teachers and friends who from different countries. I remember that they helped me to do my homework and we went to Pizza Hut and Subway together. We talked about our own countries and the feelings that we had. I know that you were always with me no matter I was sad or happy. I won’t forget the road that we walked together. The memories that we had and the important things that you told me.”

Wan-Ting Lee, Taiwan

“Though I don’t like English very much, but here is a good environment to study English. English here isn’t boring. It becomes interesting. In St. Norbert College, we have three classes about writing, reading, and speaking. All the teachers here are very interesting.

“We had more activities here. We played many games we didn’t play before. We also made many friends from different countries. I always remember Long, Nou, Bee, Jou, Yang, Tosei, Sun and others.”

            Yin-In Huang, Taiwan

“Before I came here, I am a little sad because I can’t see my parents for one month. This is my first time leave home by myself. My parents hope I’m not only to learn to study but also learn a lot of things like (being) more independent and more patient. Most important, they want me to observe and learn from real life, and they even hope my world view can more wide than before.”

            Amanda Chen, Taiwan
