Faculty Development
The spirit of faculty development manifests itself throughout the history of St. Norbert College. Over the years the college has supported a strong set of faculty development practices. Since 1985, those existing practices, along with several newly inaugurated activities and programs, have been coordinated through a comprehensive Faculty Development program specially tailored for, and carefully designed to meet the changing needs of, the St. Norbert College faculty.
The St. Norbert College Faculty Development program provides opportunities for professional and personal renewal and growth to faculty in all stages of their careers. The program first creates a wide range of opportunities, and then provides the help faculty need to take full advantage of these opportunities. The faculty express their needs to the director and to the members of the Faculty Development committee, and they in turn design opportunities to meet these needs.
Above all else, the program is intended to create an environment of opportunity, an environment conducive to growth, revitalization and renewal.
Mission and vision
St. Norbert College is a Catholic, liberal arts college embracing the Norbertine tradition of community. The college enrolls about 2000 undergraduate students. The cornerstone of St. Norbert College’s mission is to “provide a superior education that is personally, intellectually, and spiritually challenging.” Correspondingly, the mission of the Office of Faculty Development (OFD) is to provide opportunities for professional and personal renewal and growth to both full- and part-time faculty members in all stages of their careers. Further, much as the college dedicates itself to “providing institutional resources which encourage personal development in an atmosphere of caring, mutual respect, and trust,” so too the OFD commits itself to maintaining the resources requisite for fostering an environment of hope and opportunity–an environment conducive to growth, revitalization, and renewal. Finally, just as the college strongly values high “academic quality” in the form of “superior faculty, staff, students, academic programs, and resources,” so too does the OFD make central to its mission bringing to full potential the skills, talents, and expertise of all faculty members. In sum, faculty development at St. Norbert College is a communal effort possessing the potential to benefit all institutional constituencies, and to unite those groups into a vibrant and nurturing learning community characterized by the open communication, mutual respect, and trust to which our collegial mission statement binds us.
