Rebecca McKean, Assistant
Professor of Geology Funding
of $650.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Williamsburg, VA,
to attend the Early Career Geoscience Faculty: Teaching Research, and Managing
Your Career Workshop, June 12-18, 2011, to help determine where best to place one’s
time and energy, balance the different demands on time, and develop projects
that will utilize undergraduate research opportunities.
Charles Jacobs, Assistant
Professor of Political Science Funding
of $650.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Chicago, IL, to participate in
the Midwest Association of Pre-Law Advisors Annual Conference, October 27-30,
2011, to continue the development of the newly established pre-law program by
attending the conference and specifically, to attend the session for
experienced pre-law advisors, and to gain insights into advising students about
personal statements, application essays, and application addenda statements.
Ikuko Torimoto, Associate
Professor of Japanese Funding
of $650.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Denver, Co, to participate in
the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Conference, November
18-20, 2011, to update the evaluation of the Oral Proficiency Interview and
Japanese placement exam, so that St.
Norbert College
is prepared to implement a foreign language requirement in the fall of
2012.
Susan Landt, Associate
Professor of Education Funding
of $650.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Chicago, IL,
to participate in the NCTE Annual Convention:
Reading the Past, Writing the Future, November 19-22, 2011, to attend
the workshop “My Story, Your Story, Our Story:
Cultural Connections and Issues in Children’s Literature,” for focus on
cultural authenticity in children’s literature.
Three
awards were granted for 2010-2011:
Deborah Anderson, Associate
Professor of Biology Funding
of $600.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Washington, D.C.,
to attend the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Institute, July 14-17,
2010, and gain some formal training with colleagues while documenting new
pedagogical approaches that encourage student learning. This training will help better serve
undergraduates who hope to get the most out of their education.

of $600.00 to help cover expenses for travel to New Haven, CT,
to attend the Interdisciplinary Summer Workshop for College Instructors:
Processes of Constitutional and Legal Change, July 10-17, 2010, to gain some
formal training and education materials through debates and presentations. As pre-law advisor, this will help better
serve undergraduates who hope to pursue law as a vocation.
Beth Tarasawa, Assistant Professor
of Sociology Funding
of $600.00 to help cover expenses to Portland, OR, to attend the “From
Reciprocity to Collective Transformation:
Achieving the Potential of Community-Campus Partnerships” conference, May
22-26, 2011, to enhance the foundations of higher education partnerships with
contemporary understandings, research, and practice to improve service-learning
development. This will deepen the
interest and practice of community-higher education partnership.

awards were available for 2009-2010 due to the Dean of the College identifying
one-time supplemental funding and two were awarded. They are:
Charles Jacobs, Assistant
Professor of Political Science Funding
of $500.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Chicago, IL,
to attend the Midwest Association of Pre-Law Advisors (MAPLA) Conference,
October 15-17, 2009, and gain some formal training and education materials
through forums, plenary sessions, and presentation. As pre-law advisor, this will help better
serve undergraduates who hope to pursue law as a vocation.
Tom Conner, Professor of
French Funding
of $500.00 to help cover expenses to Tucson, AZ, to attend the Second
International Conference on the Development and Assessment of Intercultural
Competence, January 29-31, 2010, to look for ways to gain greater results for
improving cultural assessment in courses and develop a more flexible rubric
that is capable of reflecting the variety of content in the upper-level French
curriculum. Ways to develop challenging
assignments to evaluate students’ degree of cultural competence were also
sought.

Funding of $500.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Houston, TX, to attend the Joint Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of American, American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, October 3-8, 2008, and gain new insights to develop knowledge and skill at combining pedagogical scholarship with paleontological research.
Mark Bockenhauer, Associate Professor of Geography
Funding of $500.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Madison, WI, to attend the Mapping Wisconsin Communities: Intro to GIS and Community Workshop, and learn computer mapping skills to further upgrade and enhance classroom strategies.
Thomas Conner, Professor of French
Funding of $500.00 to help cover expenses for travel to Orlando, FL, to attend the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, November 21-23, 2008, to further development of personal and discipline outcomes assessment, foreign language education, grant writing, and administrative leadership in the foreign language discipline.
