What can I do with a degree in geology?

Advanced degrees in geology typically result in higher starting salaries, more job opportunities and greater responsibility. Geologists can find employment in federal agencies:
  • The U.S. Geological Survey
  • Environmental Protection Agency
  • U.S. Forest Service
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Many geoscientists also find employment with state geological surveys, state regulatory agencies, educational institutions and private businesses (environmental consulting firms, petroleum corporations and mining companies).

Approximately 75% of our majors have gone on to graduate programs in the United States, all with full financial support in the form of graduate teaching or research assistantships. Graduate financial support typically pays all expenses (tuition and living stipend) for graduate students while they complete their advanced degrees. Awards of graduate assistantships are normally based on a competitive process where students are judged on their academic performance (grades, course work and scores on the graduate record examination) and letters-of-recommendation from faculty.

Our students have earned graduate degrees at a number of major universities including:
  • University of Texas - Austin
  • University of Colorado - Boulder
  • Colorado School of Mines
  • Michigan State University
  • The Ohio State University
  • University of Utah
  • Indiana University
  • Purdue University
  • University of Minnesota - Duluth
Most St. Norbert College geology graduates have entered the field of environmental geology and are employed by geotechnical consulting firms in the upper Midwest. The unusual success of graduates from the geology program is based on a demanding, traditional undergraduate curriculum in geology coupled with faculty who take a genuine interest in the success and education of their students.
