Since the fall of 2000, Dr. Michael Lovano has held the position of Assistant Professor of History at St. Norbert College. As the Europeanist among the History faculty, he teaches courses on everything from the Trojan War to Kosovo. Before coming to St. Norbert, Lovano worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pepperdine University, and at UCLA as a Lecturer for the Department of Classics and for the Department of History. Additionally, he served as the instructor of overseas summer programs in Rome, Italy, for both UCLA and Loyola Marymount University/Loyola University Chicago.
Dr. Lovano's academic interests include the history of ancient Rome and ancient Greece, medieval-Renaissance humanism/intellectual history, classical historiography, and Latin literature, as well as ancient archaeology, architecture, and numismatics. He conducts research primarily in the field of Roman history, especially political biography, historiography, civil war, and propaganda. Lovano's publications include a book on Julius Caesar's father-in-law entitled The Age of Cinna (in the Historia Einzelschriften series of Franz Steiner Verlag), a book chapter on Tacitus' Annals (in Classical Literature and Its Times from Thomson-Gale), as well as many book reviews.
Lovano was honored by St. Norbert College with the Ledvina Award for Excellence in Teaching in the spring semester 2009.
