Roommates
My student is having a difficult time with his/her roommate. What advice should I give him/her? | return to top
Suggest to your student that they revisit the roommate contract with their roommate(s).  If they have trouble confronting the situation, suggest that they go and speak with a Resident Assistant (RA).  RAs can provide support and help to communicate with their roommate.

Updating the roommate contract and working with the RA just isn’t working. My student is still having trouble with his/her roommate. What is the next step? | return to top
If direct communication and revision of the roommate contract are not working, the next step is to have the Hall Director conduct a mediation.  Hall Directors can help provide further support and help problem-solve the situation.

I want my student’s roommate removed from the room. My student is not causing the problems in the room and did not break the roommate contract. How can you make this happen?

The policy of our department is to exhaust every possible means of solution before granting a room change.  This process may take between two to four weeks.  Students bringing forth the complaint are asked to consider moving to improve their situation and environment.  Room changes must be made with the approval of the Department of Residential Education and Housing.

My student is having trouble with study skills and test taking. Is there a place on campus where he/she can go to receive help?

Yes, your student can visit Academic Support Services to help figure out the best way to improve your student’s difficulties.

Can my student bring a car to campus?

Yes, all students can bring a car to campus, though there are certain regulations that each student must meet before he/she parks in an SNC parking lot.  For more information, please visit the Campus Safety website.

What kind of meal plan should my student sign up for?

Students residing in the residence halls: Madeline/Lorraine, Bergstrom, Mary Minahan McCormick, Burke, Sensenbrenner, Victor McCormick and Michels Hall are required to be on the Meal Plan based on their class standing. Students residing in the above residence halls will automatically be signed up and billed through the Bursar Office at the beginning of each semester for their assigned plan. Students have the option of purchasing a larger Meal Plan than required at their corresponding rate. All Meals and Meal Dollars must be used within each semester.  Students in upper class housing have the option of choosing different meal plans which can be found on the Campus Card Services website.

What is the purpose of a student ID card? | return to top
A student ID card allows the student to access to all Residence Halls before 9:00pm and their assigned Residence Hall 24/7.  The card also holds the meal plan and custom cash which lets the student swipe into the cafeteria and buy items from Phil’s, Ed’s, or the vending machines on campus.  For lost or stolen ID cards, students should contact Campus Card Services immediately.

Important Days, Damages, Lofts, Etc.
Are there any important days my student should know about? | return to top
Yes! All students should check out the academic calendar and the deadlines for the Department of Residential Education and Housing.

What are chargeable damages and how does my student go about dealing with these charges?

There are two types of room charges that can be billed to a student’s account: common area damages and individual damages.  Students are also held responsible for general hall damage or vandalism and asked to identify the person(s) responsible. If damage occurs in a hall or wing, such as in a recreation room or an elevator, and the person(s) responsible cannot be identified, the cost of repair is divided among the residents of that residential life area. The costs assessed to a student's account for floor and/or hall damages will be charged as a total "Room Damages" entry on the statement, along with individual room damages. Each student is responsible for any and all damages or vandalism that may occur in his/her assigned unit. Payment for such damages or vandalism must be made promptly. Depending on the situation, 20% of the total damage costs may be added as a punitive fine.

Does my student need a loft for his/her room?

When it comes to lofting, students and their roommates must decide whether or not to rent a loft based on personal preference.  Many students find lofting an easy way to create more space in their room.  Students living in Burke Hall do not need to rent a loft because the rooms come pre-lofted.  For more information on lofting possibilities, costs, etc, please click here.
