Living/Learning Residential Opportunities

Michels Hall Service Program
Requirement of residents of Michels Hall
The Michels Hall Service Program* is a living-learning service opportunity available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors at St. Norbert College.  Students apply for the program in groups of eight with the intention of living together in Michels Hall and completing an academic year of service to a specific community organization that serves children and/or families in the Brown County area.  Examples of previous community partners include the Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay, Freedom House Ministries and the Greater Green Bay YMCA.

Each group must identify a group leader within the group and a St. Norbert College faculty or staff advisor who will work along-side them throughout the year.  Students will be required to reflect upon their service and share their experience with other members of the program and campus community.

It is hoped that students participating in the Michels Hall Service Program will develop a deeper understanding of how their actions in the community connect them to St. Norbert College and the common good all while inspiring them to adopt a life-long commitment to service.
For more information, contact Brianne Johnson at brianne.johnson@snc.edu.

*Please note that in compliance with the requirements of the building bond there is an income cap for Michels residents.  Information is detailed in the application requirements.

Substance-free Floor
Residents making a commitment to live substance-free in an environment without alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The hope is to create a comfortable, safe and close-knit community free from the pressures associated with substances. This program is available to residents of Mary Minahan McCormick Hall.

Honors Housing
First year Honors students are housed in Bergstrom Hall.  Bergstrom is a coeducational hall, located on the north side of campus overlooking the Fox River that houses a total of 80 students.  Each floor of Bergstrom contains a kitchen, and a laundry room is also located on the first floor of the building.  The newly renovated second floor lounge features comfortable seating, flat screen TV and blu ray DVD player.  The third floor lounge is set up with tables for quiet study.

The staff consists of three Resident Assistants, one Associate Hall Director and one Hall Director.  These staff members focus their programming efforts specifically for the Honors community and often collaborate with faculty (Honors and otherwise) to provide engaging and relevant in-hall programs.  In addition, hall staff attends Honors Council meetings in the hall on a rotating basis to keep informed about the program.  Honors Housing seeks to have a minimum of one Honors RA in the hall, however resident assistants for this community are not required to be Honors students.

Studies consistently show that engagement in co-curricular life and the formation of networks of supportive friends are important factors in success in higher education.  Most students' relationships are created from the people in close proximity.  With this in mind, the Honors Residential Community encourages students to be a part of a community of scholars in the residence hall as well as the classrooms.  This sense of community is achieved thought the integration of residential and academic life.  Since most of the residents of this hall are Honors students, study groups and a network of information about Honors and other classes are quickly formed at the beginning of each semester.  Students in Bergstrom also have the advantage of meeting and interacting with upperclass Honors students through Honors Council, which meets in Bergstrom.

Living in the Honors residential community means that you will learn with - and learn from - students from every discipline and background.  Out of class interaction with faculty is encouraged.  Your excitement about what you are learning, the shared outings and cultural and recreational events with floormates, and the new friends you make create a comfortable and stimulating living environment.

Goals of the Honors Residential Learning Community are:

  • To develop a strong sense of academic community among the students participating in the Honors Housing program
  • To provide additional out of class opportunities for the students to interact with faculty members who teach Honors courses
  • To provide a community living experience that is supportive of students' academic success and interests
