Living at St. Norbert College
Welcome to Residence Hall Living! | Return to the top
It is great to have you living at St. Norbert College! The following information will answer some of the questions you may have about residence hall living at St. Norbert College.
St. Norbert students have many housing options including residential halls, apartments, townhouses, and college-owned houses. We even have halls dedicated to community service initiatives. As you progress through your four years, you have the option of choosing increasingly independent options, from residence halls your first year, to college-owned houses your senior year. Since, by its nature, St. Norbert is a four-year residential college, all students must live on campus.
All students have access to The Citizen, a Student Guide to the SNC Community, at http://www.snc.edu/studentaffairs/citizen.html. Please read it thoroughly and become familiar with all aspects of campus life, including college policies and student conduct procedures.
Mission
The Department of Residential Education and Housing provides a variety of housing options, while celebrating the Norbertine tradition of community . Our role is to make St. Norbert College a preferred place to live. We provide co-curricular programs and leadership opportunities in a value-orientated living and learning environment. We strive to create a safe community, while preparing students to live, work, and serve.

Meet Your REH Staff | Return to the top
Residence Hall Director
The Hall Director is a full-time professional member of the REH staff with training and experience in residence life and student development. This person is responsible for training and supervising the Resident Assistants, advising individual students and hall governments, enforcing rules and regulations, implementing administrative policies and procedures, and developing programs that contribute to student development. Residence Hall Directors are excellent resources for residents because of their training and referral skills.
Associate Hall Directors
Associate Hall Directors are students who oversee Bergstrom Hall and Michels Hall under the careful guidance of the professional Hall Director staff.
Assistant Hall Directors
Assistant Hall Directors, in addition to the below duties of a Resident Assistant, work with the Hall Directors to manage the numerous tasks involved in keeping each residence hall a safe and friendly community.
Resident Assistants (RA)
Resident Assistants are experienced student leaders who live on each floor of the residence halls. Your RA has been selected as a Resident Assistant because of his or her concern for others, knowledge of the College, scholarship, and dedication to the philosophy of residence hall living. He or she facilitates an active and cooperative living environment that is conducive to studying, personal growth, and safety. They also receive special training in all aspects of residence hall life to personally assist students and/or to make referrals in such situations.
Your Housing Assignment | Return to the top
The Department of Residential Education and Housing begins processing new student applications in the middle of June. Applications are individually reviewed and assignments are made based on date of deposit, hall preferences, smoking preferences, student interests, and lifestyle preferences. Assignments are sent through your SNC email in late July. By the end of July, all residence halls have been assigned. If you have a request prior to July, we would be happy to take it into consideration. All requests should be submitted electronically to The Department of Residential Education and Housing (REH) at housing@snc.edu.
If a room change request is made due to a roommate conflict , all other means of resolution (e.g., roommate contracts, mediation, arbitration) must be exhausted before a room change will be granted. Consultation with your Resident Assistant and/or your Hall Director is expected before any room change can take place. To encourage you to get to know your roommate, REH will not make any room changes for the first two weeks students are on campus. The Department of REH expects students to make every effort to live together in a civil and responsible manner.

Cable
Each residence hall is equipped with cable TV. The cost of the "basic" cable service is included in the semester housing charges. Media Services provides the cable cord, converter boxes, and repair service. Students need to provide their own TV. For more information please visit the Media Services web site or contact them directly at 920-403-3245.
Computer Access
Each residence hall room has a data jack and a hub, allowing two computers to be hooked up in each room. The data jack will provide access to the campus computer system as well as the internet. To utilize the College system, students will need to contact the Computer Services Office, who will provide instructions on how to get connected. Students need to purchase a computer network cable from the College bookstore (can be purchased new or used) or from a computer distributor. In general, a cable of 15 to 30 feet is recommended for a student room. For more information, please visit the computer services web site at http://www.snc.edu/techsupport/.
Telephone
Each room is equipped with a phone and voice mail. The cost of basic telephone service is included in the semester housing charge. For more information please visit the telecommunications web site at http://www.snc.edu/telcomstore/.
Extras - Laundry, Mail, Parking | Return to the top
Laundry
Each student is personally responsible for their own laundry. Laundry is $1.25 per load and students pay for laundry using Custom Cash only. Each hall has Maytag large capacity washers and dryers and an ironing board.
As a complimentary service to SNC students, a LaundryView monitoring system has also been installed. Using the LaundryView monitoring system, you can monitor the status of washers and dryers in laundry rooms across campus from your computer. Not only can you see what machines are available, you can also see how many minutes are left in each cycle.
Mail
At the beginning of the year, you will receive a mailbox suite number and a key from the Mail Center. You will have the same suite number for your entire stay at St. Norbert College. For more information, please visit the campus resources web site at http://www.snc.edu/studentorgs/handbook/campus.html.
Parking
Campus Safety is in charge of all parking on campus. First year students are allowed to have a car on campus, but they must park in Lot 12 or Lot 16 as they are specifically designated for first year students. For more parking information and maps of campus parking lots please visit the campus safety parking web site at http://www.snc.edu/campussafety/parking/.
Lofts | Return to the top
The St. Norbert College Department of Residential Education and Housing has teamed up with Campus Lofts Inc. to bring students, their families, and friends a simple solution to lofting!
Students are now able to rent lofts from Campus Lofts, Inc. Available as single bed lofts, these lofts can be modified into the "L-shaped" design that is popular in several buildings on campus. Be sure to discuss with your roommate any plans for lofting prior to moving in! (Please be sure to check out the loft setup at the REH presentation, and at the resource fair). There are several different lofting possibilities for each hall. Keep in mind not all students need lofts. More information regarding lofts is available on the REH website http://www.snc.edu/housing/loft.html.
To access the St. Norbert College portion of the Campus Lofts Inc. web page, use the code DV9L.
If you have questions during the academic year, please email us at loftcoordinator@snc.edu.

Residence Hall Government | Return to the top
Residence Hall Councils
Each residence hall has a Hall Council, which is the student government and programming body for the residence hall. Every student who lives in a residence hall has the opportunity and is encouraged to be a member of the Hall Council and the Residence Hall Association.
Traditionally, Hall Councils have been very active and have provided many leadership opportunities within the hall. They have organized social activities such as hall olympics, intramurals, and service programs. Most importantly, hall councils give students a voice regarding campus issues and opportunities to further develop leadership styles.
Residence Hall Association (RHA)
The Residence Hall Association is the primary governing and programming body for all of the residence halls. It is composed of elected representatives from each of the residence halls and an executive board. Its purpose is to encourage cooperation among its members and to provide social, intellectual, and cultural programming for all students. RHA also works closely with the REH staff to establish services and policies that meet student concerns in the residence halls. You can find more information on RHA at http://www.snc.edu/rha/.
National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH)
The National Residence Hall Honorary is a group that is composed of the top 1% of leadership in the residence halls. This group is committed to recognition and philanthropy. Through these two acts, NRHH strives to make SNC a fantastic place to live and to touch the lives of as many people as possible! You can find more information on NRHH at http://www.snc.edu/nrhh/.
Keeping Yourself & Your Belongings Safe | Return to the top
Campus Safety
Safety and security-related issues are handled by the Campus Safety Office which is comprised of a Director, Associate Director, 3 full time safety officers, and approximately 8 student officers. Staff members are trained in CPR, first aid, and basic law enforcement, fire protection, and other crisis situations. The Campus Safety staff members are not commissioned police officers. They do not have power of arrest and therefore do not carry weapons. The staff works with the De Pere Police Department, who assist with on-campus and off-campus situations. For more information please visit the Campus Safety web site at http://www.snc.edu/campussafety/.
Personal Property
The College assumes no responsibility for the theft, damage, loss of money, valuables, or personal belongings of any student or guest. It is important that students check with their family concerning the extent of coverage under existing insurance policies. Each student is strongly encouraged to consider carrying some form of personal property insurance if he/she is not covered under his/her parents' homeowner's insurance policy.
Guidelines for Campus Living | Return to the top
For more information on Housing guidelines and policy please visit The Citizen at http://www.snc.edu/studentaffairs/citizen.html .
A violation of any College policy may result in the student being considered in the College conduct system, regardless of any action taken by civil authorities.
Alcohol and Drug Policy
Members of the College community are subject to all state, county, and municipal laws/ordinances regulating the sale and use of alcoholic beverages and illegal substances, as well as College regulations pertaining to the same.
Courtesy/Quiet Hours
Courtesy hours are observed 24 hours a day, seven days a week in all residence halls. Courtesy hours require that residents are considerate of others living in their community and will maintain a reasonable level of quiet. Quiet hours require that residents or visitors must ensure that their noise level does not disturb other residents. Specific quiet hours are observed during these times:
Sunday - Thursday 10:00PM - 9:00AM
Friday - Saturday Midnight - 9:00AM
These times may be changed at the discretion of the Director of Residential Education and Housing.
Pet Policy
Only fish are permitted in the residence halls. "Visiting" pets are also prohibited. Fish tanks may not be larger than 20 gallons. Service animals wearing harnesses and under the control of their owners shall be exempt from these provisions.
Smoking/Tobacco Use Policy
The use of smoking or chewing tobacco products are prohibited inside of and within 25 feet around all campus buildings. Tobacco products are not sold through any College outlet.
Storage
Bicycle storage
Racks for bicycles are provided outside each hall. Inside storage facilities are provided for winter months. Check with an REH staff member for more details. Bicycles may be stored in student rooms, but not in stairwells, corridors, utility rooms, kitchens, or other public areas.
Motorcycle storage
Motorcycles are governed by College motor vehicles regulations and are to be parked in student parking lots. Any motorized vehicle found inside a residence hall facility is considered a fire hazard and will be removed. Parking of motorized vehicles, including mopeds and scooters, are not allowed in the bicycle racks or on sidewalks near the residence halls.
Suitcases & Boxes
There are no storage facilities available for student use. Students should plan on finding storage space in their rooms for all luggage or boxes.
Visitation Hours
Visitation is a privilege granted to students in residence halls who agree to supervise and regulate themselves and their guests. Residents should escort their guests while in the hall at all times. The hours of visitation are established to provide privacy for residents within each floor/wing community. The responsibility for the effectiveness of this policy lies in the hands of each resident, the Hall Council in each hall, and REH staff members. Specific visitation hours are as follows:
Sunday - Thursday 9:00 a.m. - Midnight
Friday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m.
Move In Day! | Return to the top
The residence hall staff will be ready for you to move in on Thursday, August 27th, 2009, at 8:00 a.m.
If you are participating in a fall sport, you may be required to move in earlier. Please be advised that you may not be able to move to your permanent fall assignment during that early arrival time. We recommend that you pack for "camp" and have the rest of your belongings brought Thursday, August 27. If you live too far away for this to be practical, you may have to move twice, so pack accordingly.
When you arrive on campus, all traffic will be routed to the Third Street parking lot. There, cars are lined up and allowed to progress to the proper hall when space allows. You will find REH staff and Orientation team members ready to assist you with any questions you may have. We will ask that you unload your vehicle promptly and then move it to a longer term parking area.
You will be issued room keys and a Room Condition Report form (RCR). The RCR is very important; by carefully filling it out you are assuring that you will not be assessed charges for any missing items or damage caused by previous residents.
Moving equipment, such as carts and dollies, will generally not be available. Thus, you should plan on bringing your own if you feel it would be helpful for move-in day.
Additionally, you should plan on attending your first floor meeting. It is very important that you attend this meeting. In doing so, you will have a chance to meet your RA and your neighbors for the year. The meeting will also allow you to get an introduction to your hall and instruction that will help you through your first weeks of school. |
