Semester in Washington, D.C. or Washington Semester is a program offered each semester in collaboration with the American University in Washington, D.C. Students are given an opportunity to study at AU for a semester and during this time, in addition to taking classes, they also complete an internship in an area of their interest. From interning at the congressional offices to various departments of the executive and judicial branches, or even nonprofit, media or other business organizations, the opportunities are limitless. The Washington Semester Advisor works closely with a student and American University to develop a semester in a way that best fits students' long-term plans and immediate needs. "I would describe the Washington Semester program an opportunity to explore theoretical principles, real-life application of concepts and a chance to delve deep into issues related specifically your program of interest. I found the experience to be exciting, intriguing, educational and life-changing. I have developed many friendships from this program and learned a lot about myself, my interests and my capabilities through my internship with the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.
Students should take advantage of this wonderful chance at living and exploring our nation's Capital because it's something that doesn't come around that often. To be in a place where there are so many ideas, discussions related to current societal issues and chances to learn about our history and culture as a nation is exhilarating. Not a day goes by that I do not wish I was sitting in a D.C. courthouse or roaming the halls of the many Smithsonian Museums."
