Fixing Broken Links

In order to fix a broken link, you need to investigate each one individually.
  • If the address of the page you're linking to has changed, then change your link accordingly.
  • If the page/site you're linking to no longer exists, then remove the link from your page.
  • If the page you're linking to is one of your own pages and you accidentally unpublished it, then fix it by re-publishing the page.
  • If the page you're linking to is one of your own pages and you accidentally deleted it, then fix it by recreating and re-publishing the page.
  • If the page you're linking to is on another site, and you can’t figure out what happened to it, contact the site owner and ask. If they say that they accidentally deleted or unpublished the page and will be restoring it soon, then do nothing and check your link report until the problem is resolved.

Broken link reports

Broken link reports are generated on the server every weekday and sent to the departmental e-mail address listed in the lower left corner of the web site (e.g., dining@snc.edu). Make sure that whoever handles your departmental e-mail forwards those broken link reports to whoever is responsible for the department's web site.

Remote/non-SNC links

For remote links (those to non-SNC sites), errors could mean that the web site you're linking to is gone, is temporarily down, or was down when the link checker was running. However, it's very common for the SNC link checker to falsely report remote links as broken, because some web sites do not allow the link checker to access their site. If a link is reported as broken, but it works fine when you click on it, then yours is probably one of these cases and you do not need to worry about it. Because of this, if all of your site's broken links are remote links, then you will only receive a broken link report via e-mail once per week (currently on Mondays), rather than daily. You should still check the report each week to make sure that nothing has changed.

Can't find the broken link?

You may sometimes receive reports of broken links that you can't find anywhere on your page. This is because when you edit text areas containing links, Cascade will often leave the HTML code of an old link in the page, even if you've deleted the text that was the link. These links don't appear on the page, but because they're in the code of the page, the link checker still reports them. These links are difficult to find; in fact, the only way to find them is by looking at the HTML code of the page. To do so:

  1. Edit the page in Cascade.
  2. Click on the HTML button in the editing toolbar.
  3. Maximize the HTML window.
  4. Press Ctrl+f to open the Find box (at the bottom).
  5. Search for the offending link. When you find it, it will be something like <a href="/techsupport/link.html"></a>, or there may be something in between like <a href="/techsupport/link.html"><br /></a> or <a href="/techsupport/link.html"> </a>.
  6. Delete everything in that range, including the opening & closing brackets.
  7. Click the Update button, then click the Submit button.
  8. Re-publish the page.

If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, just reply to the broken link e-mail and indicate which link(s) you could not find and a member of the web team will fix it for you.

Other common errors

  • Not found (404): This is the most common error. It means that the web site is fine but the page does not exist. The web site owner may have removed it or renamed it, or you may have just spelled it wrong in your link. Do a bit of investigation to determine if you should change your link or just remove it altogether.
  • Internal server error (500): This means that something's wrong on the the remote site's web server. If they don’t fix the problem within a couple of days, you might want to contact them and ask what's going on. If it persists for more than a few days, you should remove the link from your page.
  • Access forbidden (403): This means that you're linking to a remote page that requires a login. This is typically not a good idea, since not everyone can use the link. It's better to link to the home page of the site, then the visitor can click a link from there to login.

If you still need help fixing your broken links, just reply to the broken links report e-mail that you received and indicate which link(s) you need help with. This will put a request into our problem-tracking system and a member of the web team will get back to you.
