On Aug. 29, the first day of the fall 2005 semester, the new design for the College's web site was introduced. The initial launch included a new look and organization for the home page (www.snc.edu), Alumni, Admission and the Office of Communications. In addition to the new look and organization, the tools for production, maintenance and administration of the site are also new. The site is now being produced using a Content Management System (CMS) called Cascade Server. The CMS will allow units within the College community to produce and manage their own web sections within a browser-based tool that requires no special software or knowledge of HTML. It also allows for a consistent look and feel across the entire web site. The CMS is a powerful tool with many features, yet is relatively easy to learn to use for creating, adding and deleting basic web content.
LSI will help you get your site into the new system. As soon as we are able, we will get you training on the cms system and direct access to the cms system and so you can alter the pages yourself. Access rights are limited to select staff right now.
In order to get started, we've prepared this very simple format to get you on board quickly. If you already have a site, you can begin by making sure it is in line with the
snc style guide. Once you think you are ready to convert your current site, email
Karen Filppula and she will work with you to make it happen.
For new organization sites, get started quickly by just completing the following pages (word documents ... it's all you need!). Take a look at the newly finished organization sites to get an idea of the new format. Following is how to make it happen:
If you have not yet completed a new website/conversion request,
please do that now.
Step 1: Prepare required standard content modules
Ensure you have content (text and images) for the following two pages.
Directions:
1. Click on the applicable link below for the page of your web site you are working on.
2. Complete all of the sections in the document.
3. If you want a link to another page of snc.edu, or another web site, record the URL in parentheses and indicate the actual words that will be the link by bolding them.
4. Save the documents.
Overview Page (Home)
Contact Us page (Officers)
Step 2: At this point, you could
send the step 1 documents to Karen Filppula to get your presence on the web, and then work on the rest of this as you have time.
Or you can finish it all before you send it over. Following are ideas for additional pages and the document to get it started.

The following additional pages all use the same word form. When you save the page, save it as the display name you would like to use (i.e, alumni.doc)
Alumni (alumni news ...)
Members (listing, minutes, meetings)

Send all web page word documents by email to:
karen.filppula@snc.edu
Two very important points to remember when preparing your content:
-
It must follow the SNC styleguide.
-
Make certain there are no spelling errors or typos in your document. Clean copy will result in a quicker transition.
A Word on Pictures
Each organization will also need a header image (see example). A default header will be provided that includes a selection of College images. Custom headers that feature images from your specific organization will be provided by LSI upon request, although we will need pictures from you to do that. If you would like to develop your own header, the image size should be around 900x83 or smaller (72dpi).
Inclusion of other images in your web pages should be recorded in the documents above. LSI will also provide image use consultation and image preparation services. All images need to be optimized for the web (72 dpi). We can help with that if you don't know how. |
