Begin thinking about the structure you want the service learning course to take, as well as what learning outcomes you have to accomplish through the service experience.
Brainstorm with the Service Learning Coordinator possible service projects and course structure, determining a project that will best meet projected student learning outcomes.
Allow the Service Learning Coordinator to assist you in finding appropriate community partners who will help you accomplish your goals and provide a meaningful service experience for your students.
Make contact with community partners and revise your syllabus.
Determine the logistics of the service learning project (i.e. required vs. optional, number of hours the students will complete, how learning will be assessed, etc.).
Brief your students on the details of the service learning experience.
Provide students with an orientation to service learning and allow them to choose placement sites.
Have students fill out site contact form.
Ensure that each student will also have an appropriate orientation at the placement site.
Choose a method for assessing student learning (journals, final paper, group discussion, etc.).
Assess students on the learning that took place from their service experience.
Fill out a service learning course evaluation form, and have your students do the same.
