St. Norbert College High School Math Meet

Sigma Nu Delta, the St. Norbert College Math Club, will hold the 26th Annual High School Math Competition on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008. It will take place in Boyle and John Minahan Science halls located on the college campus. Registration will begin at noon, and the awards ceremony will end at around 4:00 p.m.

If you would like to enter students in the competition, please complete and return the reservation form, along with the entry fee of $20 per team, by February 6, 2008. Although this is a team competition, individuals may enter for a fee of $5 each. These individuals are eligible for all individual prizes, but not for team prizes.

A more detailed schedule and map of St. Norbert College will be sent to those teams that have made reservations. St. Norbert Presidential Scholarships, valued at a minimum of $5000 each year for up to four years, will be awarded to qualifying finishers on the basis of this competition. Medals will be given to individual winners. In the case of a tie among the team winners, a tiebreaker will be implemented.

Rules

  1. Each school will be allowed to enter one or more teams, each consisting of up to eight students, with no more than four seniors and at least one sophomore or freshman required per team. All team members must be attending the same school.
  2. No slide rules, calculators, notes or other reference materials will be permitted in the event rooms. Scratch paper will be provided.
  3. Talking during the individual events is not permitted.
  4. Each member will participate in every event. There will be four individual events (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Advanced Math) and one team event (anything).
  5. During the team event, the entire team can work as a group on each problem, individuals may be assigned to solve specific problems, or there may be any variation or combination of these methods. Talking among team members is permitted only during the team event. Points earned in the team event will count only toward the team total and not toward the individual totals.
  6. A team’s score is the sum of all members’ individual scores plus the team event score.
  7. Ties between teams will be broken by first considering the first problem from the first individual event, next the first problem from the second event, and so on. In case of a tie for individual scores, duplicate prizes will be awarded.
  8. Several St. Norbert College Presidential Scholarships (minimum value of $5,000 per year for four years) will be awarded to the top finishers, if they choose to attend St. Norbert College.
  9. Individuals may enter without being part of a team. Participants so entering are eligible for all individual prizes, but not for team awards.
