Rick Poss

Professional profile
I love teaching mathematics! My goal in teaching is to share that excitement with my students and to nurture their own love for mathematics. I view every student as a potential math major!

My area of research is logic and set theory. My doctoral dissertation dealt with weak forms of the Axiom of Constructibility. My professional career has centered about working with undergraduates—especially in a math club setting. I have been adviser to the Sigma Nu Delta Math Club for over 25 years.

Working with the St. Norbert College math club led to my involvement with the Pi Mu Epsilon National Honorary Mathematics Society. Our chapter (Wisconsin Delta) was installed in 1985. I served as a national councillor for three years. I was editor of the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal from 1990-1993. After that I served terms as national president-elect, president and past-president.

The professional organization that I feel most a part of is the Mathematical Association of America. I have been a member of the MAA since 1966 and have held several positions within the organization. I served as chair of the Wisconsin section of the MAA, I was the first coordinator of student activities for the Wisconsin section and I served as governor of the section—representing the Wisconsin section at the national meetings. I also served for six years on the national MAA Committee for Undergraduate Student Activities and Chapters.

My specialty is encouraging undergraduates to research topics new to them and then present their results at regional or national meetings. I have accompanied St. Norbert College student speakers to every summer national meeting (now part of Mathfest) of Pi Mu Epsilon since 1985. No other college or university in the country has has student speakers at every one of these meetings.
