LIST 504: Modern Biology: Menace or Miracle?

Area: Ideas and Issues in Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Instructor: Dr. Russ Feirer
Course Description
The pace of scientific discoveries and their application continues to outrace our ability to evaluate and manage their impact on society.  This is especially true with genetics and the field of biology with biomedical applications.  Adoption of these technologies has created ethical and moral, economic, an social challenges.  After providing a basic background to the science, this course will explore the benefits and challenges created by genetic testing, reproductive technologies, stem cell technology, and modern drug development.  After completing the readings, class discussions will be followed by weekly writing assignments.  Several laboratory demonstrations will also be offered to provide the opportunity to see several of the technologies firsthand.
