Academic honor code
The learning process succeeds only when students perform honestly on assignments and examinations. All students are expected to abide by the academic honor code. It defines academic dishonesty and sets forth the responsibilities of faculty and students in the event of alleged dishonesty. Possible penalties for dishonesty include reduction of a grade, failure in the course, failure and suspension, or failure and dismissal, according to the current academic honor code at St. Norbert College.
Advising
Each student is personally responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the degree. Each student will be assigned an academic adviser to help toward that goal. The counsel of faculty adviser is very important and the student should meet with her or his adviser in the selection of courses.
Audit policy
Graduate students may audit graduate level courses at half the cost of graduate tuition. There is no limit on the number of courses a student can audit. Students can audit courses within or outside their chosen area of specialization. Audited courses do not apply to the program requirements for graduation.
Graduate students who wish to audit an undergraduate level course will be charged 1/2 the cost of undergraduate tuition.
Course overload
To ensure the integrity of the program, care must be given to not allow students to take too many courses (via credit transfers and independent studies) outside the MLS curriculum. It is at the discretion of the director and the MLS Policy Committee to determine these limits for each individual student.
Criteria for transfer credits
Up to six graduate credits, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0, at another accredited graduate program may be accepted in transfer. Transferred grades are not factored into the grade point average. Courses taken more than 10 years ago ordinarily are not eligible for credit. Exceptions are subject to review by the Graduate Advisory Council. Students must provide the following:
- Official transcripts, demonstrating a minimum grade point average of 3.0, mailed by the college or university directly to the coordinator of the MLS program.
- The syllabus and/or course description from each course.
- Students requesting credit transfer from courses taken outside an accredited college or university (e.g. CPE courses) must provide the instructor's credentials, course description and/or syllabus, evidence of number of contact hours and copies of any certificates received. Credit awards for these requests are given at the discretion of the director and the MLS Advisory Board.
Incomplete grades
Once a student receives an incomplete grade, the student has 5 weeks into the next semester to complete the course work and obtain the final grade. Exact deadlines date vary slightly each year and are posted on the
registrar's web site (the summer semester is not counted). If you and your instructor feel it's necessary to extend this, the instructor must request an extension directly from the MLS director and the registrar's office before the deadline. |
