LIST 503, LIST 550 or LIST 560: Globalization and the Latino Political Imagination in the 21st Century
(Ideas and Issues in Social Sciences, Diverse Perspectives Thematic Area or International Perpectives Thematic Area)

Instructor:  Dr. Gratzia Villarroel

This course takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the rich cultural background of the growing Latino population in the united States and its political expression in the 21st century.  In a world where walls are symbols of waning sovereignty and anti-immigration laws often reflect deteriorating economic conditions, this course theorizes about the forces of globalization, migration, and urbanization throughout the Americas and their impact on the Latino experiences in the United States.  Negotiating converging identities that intersect class, race, and nationalism with an increasingly global culture, and struggling to acquire rights through various designations of citizenship, the Latino population is a vibrant social force that continues to make its mark on the U.S. political culture.
