Information

Writing Style
All students must use the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (Third Edition) on all papers and the thesis project.

Student ID cards
All students must have a student ID card to purchase books at the College bookstore or to use campus computers either at the computer lab in Bemis or the library. An ID card is available only after a student has registered. To make sure a student is in the system before obtaining their card, please contact the registrar's office at (920) 403-3216.

The cards are issued at Card Services which is located in the lower level of Sensenbrenner Memorial Union. Card Services is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the school year. Summer hours may vary. You may contact Card Services directly at (920) 403-4030.

Computer access
To create your password for computer access, please go to the computer account management web site.

Academic honor code
The learning process succeeds only when students perform honestly on assignments and examinations. All students are expected to abide by the academic honor code. It defines academic dishonesty and sets forth the responsibilities of faculty and students in the event of alleged dishonesty. Possible penalties for dishonesty include reduction of a grade, failure in the course, failure and suspension, or failure and dismissal, according to the current academic honor code at St. Norbert College.

Advising
Each student is personally responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the degree. Each student will be assigned an academic adviser to help toward that goal. The counsel of faculty adviser is very important and the student should meet with her or his adviser in the selection of courses.

Audit policy
Graduate students may audit graduate level courses at half the cost of graduate tuition. There is no limit on the number of courses a student can audit. Students can audit courses within or outside their chosen area of specialization. Audited courses do not apply to the program requirements for graduation.

Graduate students who wish to audit an undergraduate level course will be charged 1/2 the cost of undergraduate tuition.

Course overload
To ensure the integrity of the program, care must be given to not allow students to take too many courses (via credit transfers and independent studies) outside the MTS curriculum. It is at the discretion of the director and the MTS Policy Committee to determine these limits for each individual student.

Criteria for transfer credits
Up to six graduate credits, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0, at another accredited graduate program may be accepted in transfer. Transferred grades are not factored into the grade point average. Courses taken more than 10 years ago ordinarily are not eligible for credit. Exceptions are subject to review by the Graduate Advisory Council. Students must provide the following:

  • Official transcripts, demonstrating a minimum grade point average of 3.0, mailed by the college or university directly to the coordinator of the MTS program.
  • The syllabus and/or course description from each course.
  • Students requesting credit transfer from courses taken outside an accredited college or university (e.g., CPE courses) must provide the instructor's credentials, course description and/or syllabus, evidence of number of contact hours and copies of any certificates received. Credit awards for these requests are given at the discretion of the director and the MTS Advisory Board.

Independent Study Or Arranged Course
Students may take courses(s) in their area of specialization outside of the classroom. Both Independent Study and Arranged Courses must be pre-approved by the director. An Independent Study is a course developed to meet an area of study not offered in the MTS programs and uses the course number THEO 590.   An Arranged course is a course that is offered in the program.  Students must provide explanation as to why he/she is unable to take the course when offered and must be approved prior to scheduling the course.  Independent Study or Arranged Courses can not be offered for a core course unless a formal petition is made to the MTS Policy Committee and will be reviewed on a case by case situation.  Students may not take more than 4 credits (2 courses) for specialization courses as an Independent Study or Arranged Course.  The student must provide credentials of the instructor that shows a M.A. or Ph.D. in the area of specialization along with a complete syllabus that includes a required text list.  The course number for an Arranged Course is the same as listed in the course descriptions.

Incomplete Grades
Once a student receives an incomplete grade, the student has 5 weeks into the next semester to complete the course work and obtain the final grade. Exact deadlines date vary slightly each year and are posted on the Registrar's website on the Academic Calendar page. (The summer semester is not counted). If you and your instructor feel it's necessary to extend this, the instructor  must request an extension directly from the MTS Director and the Registrar's Office before the deadline.
