Activities underway for construction of the Mulva Library
May thru August, 2007
- Identified new locations for Residential Life, Campus Ministry and Parish Offices.
- Currently completing renovations for new locations for Residential Life in St. John’s Hall, Campus Ministry in the PAC.
- In discussions with local company regarding a possible agreement to dismantle the current houses for Residential Life and Campus Ministry in exchange for the building materials which would be recycled.
- Carefully developed an inclusive scope of services with no duplications and entered into a contract with Performa and Hillier architectural firms. Performa will serve as the architect of record allowing the College to realize the benefits and economies of retaining the services of a local architectural firm with previous knowledge and experience with building projects of the College. Hillier will serve as the design architect which will leverage the work already performed by Hillier and the College ultimately will have a library designed by Hillier.
- Determined the delivery methodology to be with a construction manager and all construction work will be required to be competitively bid, including work that could be self-performed by the construction manager.
- Issued an RFP for the selection of a construction manager and reviewed bids from three firms.
- Selected Miron Construction Company to provide pre-construction services as our construction manager.
- Reviewed project scope with Performa to determine exact items included in this project (ie utility tunnel, closing of College Avenue).
- Two day meeting with Performa and Hillier architectural firms and Miron Construction Company on July 30 and 31 to carefully evaluate current conceptual design and program requirements.
- Developing a proposed construction timeline.
- Evaluation of current proposed name for the Mulva Library, especially in view of re-organization of current library services, computer services, media services and telecommunications into Information Services with a new position of Associate Vice President of Information Services overseeing this area. (Our previous Director of Library Services is currently the Interim Associate Vice President of Information Services). Mulva Library emerged as the preferred name.
- Detailed discussions about our philosophy regarding LEED/green or renewable resources with regard to the Mulva Library. The LEED scorecard will be utilized to evaluate green initiatives, but because of cost factors to attain actual LEED certification, the building will not be LEED certified.
- Completing soil borings on the site.
- Follow-up meeting with Performa and Hillier architectural firms and Miron Construction Company on August 21 to evaluate two proposed schematic design options and discussion of the impact of current information obtained in soil borings on proposed schematic designs.
- Initial review of possible scoring using a LEED scorecard as a guide.
- Moved Campus Ministry offices into new location in PAC.
-
September, 2007
- Space Committee reviewed amended request for location of Parish Offices and amended their recommendation for the location of the Parish Offices to a room in PAC.
- Currently completing renovations in PAC for Parish Offices.
- Negotiations and purchase of two additional properties for construction of new parking lot to replace parking lost by construction of Mulva Library.
- Complete survey work, soil borings and design work for new parking lot.
- Follow-up meeting with Performa and Hillier architectural firms and Miron Construction Company on September 13 to evaluate schematic design option which incorporated some minor interior design improvements such as an additional entrance to the west, relocating the 24 hour café from the west to the northwest corner and expanding the use of skylights to create a new openness to the building. In addition, a new exterior design option was presented. Project schedule was shared, as well as the current trend estimate for bringing the design in line with Board approved square footage. Basement options were explored.
- Follow-up meeting with the original Library Planning Committee to secure their thoughts relating to the proposed new exterior design. The Committee supported the original exterior design and this was communicated to Hillier.
