Harry Maier Community Service Scholarship

Harry Maier is a native of Sheboygan and a graduate of Sheboygan North High. He served nearly two years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, attended St. Norbert College for two years, then moved on to University of Wisconsin-Madison for a degree in journalism, graduating in 1951.

Harry worked on the Portage Daily Register for five years before joining the Green Bay Press-Gazette in 1956. There he worked as a reporter, city editor, state editor and business editor, the latter for 22 years, retiring in 1993. He then joined St. Norbert College as consultant to the president for promotions and media relations, retiring again in 2004.

Harry was active with a number of community organizations including Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, Fort Howard Apartments, Kiwanis, St. Norbert College, Green Bay Curling Club, Bay Area Community Council, Green Bay Redevelopment Authority and St. Patrick Parish.

The Harry Maier Community Service Scholarship is presented annually to a student who not only recognizes the value of community service, but also is an active participant in that community. That participation is demonstrated by holding an active role in organizations designed for the betterment of the community and the people who live there.
