St. Norbert Justice and Peace Ministry

The Justice and Peace Committee of St. Norbert Abbey welcomes the involvement of Norbertine lay associates, fathers, brothers, priests, and friends of the Order interested in social justice and Christian outreach.  The Committee exists to provide educational programming, legislative advocacy, advice to Abbey leadership, and a Norbertine presence to local social justice and outreach efforts.  It collaborates with the Conference of Major Superiors of Men Office of Justice and Peace, St. Norbert College Peace and Justice Center, Social Concerns Office of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin Catholic Conference, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Office of Justice, Peace and Human Development, and the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility.

St. Norbert Abbey shares with local charitable organizations
The Justice and Peace Committee recommends a different local charity to the Prior of St. Norbert Abbey to receive the weekly offertory collection from the Abbey Sunday worship community. This sum is matched from the Abbey's charitable giving fund. For January 2009, the St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter, 411 St. John St., Green Bay (see http://www.stjohnhomelessshelter.org/) will receive the gift. St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter provides a warm evening meal and emergency overnight shelter, Nov.-April, for adults in Brown County. The shelter is administered by the Diocese of Green Bay.

Justice and Peace offerings at the Norbertine Center for Spirituality
The Justice and Peace Committee holds regular offerings at the Norbertine Center for Spirituality, including JustFaith groups, Brown County Diversity Circles, the Fr. Robert M. Brooks series, and book discussions connected to the Brown County, WI community reads program One Book, One Community.  The public is welcome and encouraged to attend these activities.  For more information about the schedule for these learning opportunities, please contact the Norbertine Center for Spirituality, 920-337-4315 or Justice and Peace Committee chair Br.
