Packers QBs join college’s TKEs
Green Bay Packers quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Graham Harrell were officially inducted into St. Norbert’s Sigma Xi chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) international fraternity on Jan. 5.
More than 60 TKE members gathered at Old St. Joseph Church on campus to welcome the two new fraters at a formal ceremony. Attendees included members and alumni from around the Midwest as well as representatives from TKE’s national organization.
Dan Zegers ’11, a St. Norbert TKE who now works in the Packers organization as equipment and scouting assistant, says talk of Rodgers and Harrell becoming members started at the team’s 2010 training camp.
“Graham and Aaron were talking before a practice and one of them mentioned TKE. I overheard it because I was helping them warm up, and they just said it was a fraternity they were involved with in college. I told them I was a part of TKE at St. Norbert, and they both looked at each other and then Graham gave me a handshake,” says Zegers.
“From that day they were always asking me how TKE was and how the chapter was doing. At the time, I was recruitment chair for TKE, so obviously that drew attention across campus, knowing that Aaron and Graham were TKEs. They came to a recruitment event that I planned. It meant a lot to know they supported the brotherhood and were interested in our chapter at St. Norbert.”
Eventually, all the talk led to the private induction ceremony on campus in early January. It was a special night, according to Sigma Xi chapter president Aaron Reynolds ’13.
“It was great to see there was such a huge response from our alumni, our national headquarters and fellow brothers that are a part of other chapters,” says Reynolds. He’s enthusiastic about the positive impact Rodgers’ and Harrell’s honorary membership is likely to have on the chapter’s efforts to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Says Zegers: “I have never been a part of an honorary member initiation before, and it was cool to see the two ‘big name’ guys that I was close to being initiated into the fraternity I was a part of at St. Norbert College. I think it is huge for St. Norbert College to have those two men associated with our school. [The ceremony] wasn’t just to initiate the famous Aaron Rodgers and Graham Harrell, but it was to initiate two quality men that wanted to be in our brotherhood.”
Rodgers and Harrell became the 245th and 246th members of TKE’s Sigma Xi chapter. The story has drawn national attention from the likes of the NFL Network and ESPN.
