Emerging marketing technologies empower marketers

Podcasts, RSS, blogs—it’s hard to stay current as new technologies change shape faster than a snowman in June.

But Dana VanDen Heuvel ’99 has made it his business to help organizations understand how to leverage these new social media in their marketing initiatives. Later this month he will lead a day-and-a-half interactive workshop presented by St. Norbert’s Continuing Education Institute.

Weblogs were considered obscure and highly personal in their infancy, he says. But they rapidly gained credence and credibility in late 2004 as a result of their prominence in the political realm, and their divergence from the mainstream media coverage of current affairs.

"Weblogs will not change the world—their authors will,” says VanDen Heuvel. With these emergent technologies virtually pulsing through his veins, he has become a widely recognized expert on blogging, podcasting, RSS, internet communities and interactive marketing trends and best practices. He speaks regularly on these topics at industry events.

His company, BlogSavant, was one of the nation’s first weblog marketing consultancies, making it possible for corporations and individuals to engage in an unfiltered exchange of ideas, unencumbered by traditional technological barriers.

Internet analysts estimate that millions of people blog, says VanDen Heuvel, and new blogs are springing up by the hour. Weblogs, or blogs, are basically an online journal, updated quite frequently, arranged in reverse chronological order and open for comments posted by visitors.

VanDen Heuvel's on-campus workshop will focus on using the latest tools and technologies to reach today’s customer. Targeted toward marketers, small business owners and others involved in internet initiatives for their company or clients, the program will cover the defining basics, then move on to the planning and into the implementation stages of new media and marketing strategy.
