Weekend victories see Green Knights on their way to nationals
St. Norbert College is having its most successful winter sports season in school history, with the men’s and women’s basketball teams both qualifying for the NCAA Division III Tournament. The men’s hockey team will likely receive a berth into the NCAA Tournament as well when bids are announced March 7.
The two basketball teams made Midwest Conference history this year by both winning regular-season titles and hosting their league tournaments at Schuldes Sports Center on Feb. 26-27 – the first time in league history both tournaments have been held at the same site.
The men, under Coach Gary Grzesk, earned their first NCAA berth since 2002 with an 85-74 win over Carroll on Feb. 27 behind Dave Wipperfurth’s career-high 33 points. The triumph set a school record for wins with 22, surpassing the 1984 and 2002 NCAA tournament teams that each had 21 wins.
The Green Knight women advanced to their ninth NCAA Division III Tournament, all under venerable coach Connie Tilley. St. Norbert, making its first NCAA appearance in three years, topped Ripon 73-57 in the tournament championship on Feb. 27. The Green Knights enter the NCAA Tournament riding the crest of a 15-game winning streak.
It was a busy weekend of competition at home. While both basketball tournaments played out in Schuldes, the hockey team (under Coach Tim Coghlin) met UW-Stevens Point on home ice.
The Green Knights advanced to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Peters Cup championship game with a 7-1 rout of UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 27. The skaters, 20-3-3 on the season, are currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III West Region rankings and will face UW-River Falls for the Peters Cup crown on March 6. St. Norbert won its 11th NCHA regular-season championship in 14 years with a 14-2-2 league record.
