Something old, something new for alumni

If you’re looking for a reason to come back to campus this summer, you won’t have to look very far. The office of alumni and parent relations is hosting more than a half dozen events in the coming months, including two on June 5: the annual Day at St. Norbert and the Wedding Party, a new event for married alumni couples.

A Day at St. Norbert
Formerly called Alumni College, A Day at St. Norbert lets alumni and friends drift back into their college days by participating in their choice of 12 academic sessions presented by distinguished professors old and new. This year’s sessions range from politics to climate change and from the Galapagos to Adobe Photoshop.

Maureen Manion (Political Science, Emeritus) will return to campus to teach “Politics 2010: Policymaking in a Partisan Era.” The course will examine partisanship and what the current political shift means for long-term policymaking.

Another course, taught by veteran news anchor Tom Milbourn (Communication), will take participants behind the scenes in the newsroom, uncovering how each day’s news reaches viewers.

This daylong event also will include a continental breakfast, a luncheon keynote by Joe Kiedinger ’92 and a late-afternoon reception on the Campus Center patio.

Chris Betcher (Alumni) says what she is looking forward to most is all of the new sessions being offered this year. “Like many of the alumni and parents that join us, it is hard to decide which sessions to sit in on,” says Betcher. “The subjects taught are not only interesting but valuable.”

The Wedding Party
New this year, the Wedding Party gives alumni couples – all 1,554 of them – the chance to celebrate the love they found at St. Norbert.

The idea for this event came from former alumni board president Matt Sullivan ’95. “Matt suggested we host an event for married couples, and I thought the idea was great,” says Todd Danen (Alumni). “It will be a special day for St. Norbert College and our alums who are married to alums.”

The event will begin with a 4 p.m. communal vow-renewal service at Old St. Joseph Church and continue into the evening with a dinner reception and dancing to follow.

“I hope all of our guests have an opportunity to recall wonderful times from their past. This event will include alumni from at least five decades. The mixing should be unique,” says Danen.

Anticipating an enthusiastic response to this inaugural event, the alumni office hopes to host a Wedding Party every three to five years.
