Expanding service opportunities bring together alumni, parents and students

Plans continue to develop for a full slate of community service projects that will not only see alumni participants working side by side, but will draw in parent and student volunteers, too.

This month sees the fourth annual Into the Streets, a half-day of volunteerism opened up to alumni participation for the first time this year. It’s a chance for alums to work alongside current students while reconnecting with their own former classmates—all as they do some good in the local community.

And alumni who have served further afield will be bringing their service experiences home to a broader audience when they speak at Family Weekend next month. They want to open up their next annual service trip to parents and students who can take a week to make a difference.

Previous alumni trip sites have included Mississippi and Kentucky, but organizers are working on dates for weekend service projects nearer home. Their goal is to find ways that alums who cannot commit to a long-distance site would be able to experience the similar satisfaction of a job done well, and in good company, through volunteering within the Green Bay area.

The group’s experiences on this year’s return trip to assist in Gulf Coast cleanup made such a powerful impression on members of the group that they are eager to share what it means to live out the St. Norbert mission by working as community.

Into the Streets

Eager to get started? Green Bay area alums should consider joining the Into the Streets effort on Aug. 25. Last year more than 300 students, faculty members and staff volunteered upwards of 750 hours of service to the community in a single day. “Leading by example is the perfect way to welcome in the new freshman class,” says Tracy Boyd (Alumni and Parent Relations).

Following Into the Streets, students, faculty, staff, community members and alumni gather for lunch along with a short reflection and wrap-up.
