Reaccreditation board welcomes public comment

Readers have a chance to share their comments on St. Norbert College as part of the process that earns the college its continuing accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

Accreditation is a peer-review process intended to ensure that institutions of higher education meet acceptable standards. St. Norbert has been accredited since 1934. Its last accreditation visit was in 2001.

The college completes its next reaccreditation process this fall. HLC representatives will be on campus Oct. 31 to Nov. 4 to investigate the accuracy and thoroughness of the college’s self-study efforts, a critical part of the process. Members of the public also are invited to share comments with the HLC in advance of its visit.

Bob Rutter (Institutional Effectiveness) says: “The process of collecting and analyzing evidence is itself a catalyst for change. Several policies and procedures have been updated, modified or improved as a result of the self-study process.”

Self-study committees and forums have been discussing and collecting evidence supporting the five criteria of accreditation:

•    Mission and Integrity
•    Preparing for the Future
•    Student Learning and Effective Teaching
•    Acquisition, Discovery and Application of Knowledge
•    Engagement and Service
