A VERY GOOD YEAR: 1997

The class list—how many names do you recognize?

Out in the world:

  • A gallon of gas cost $1.23.
  • Princess Diana died in a car accident on Aug. 31.
  • The British colony of Hong Kong disappeared forever on July 1, when the economically booming territory was returned to the control of Beijing.
  • The sheep hit the fan in February, when scientists at Scotland’s Roslin Institute announced that they had cloned a ewe, Dolly, from cells from another sheep’s udder.
  • Mississippi attorney general Michael Moore hailed what he called “the most historic public health achievement in history” on June 20—a settlement between the tobacco industry and the attorneys general of 40 states, worth billions of dollars, in exchange for the industry’s immunity from future legal action.

On campus:

  • Terry Anderson, former Mideast hostage and Associated Press bureau chief, spoke about his experiences and the power of an individual to make a difference.
  • F. K. Bemis International Center is dedicated, embodying the statement “the world is our campus.”
  • President Bill Clinton is welcomed by the De Pere community, with Uncle Sam (sociology prof Tom Faase in costume) leading the way.
  • The Norbertines celebrated 100 years of service in the U.S.
  • The Rainbow Alliance saw its early beginnings on campus under the aegis of the Student Government Association.

Fond memories:

  • Welcoming the Super Bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers, back home to Titletown
  • Going to the movies, where it was all about a sinking ship—“The Titanic”
