Send-off receptions ease jitters, establish community

New students and their parents were able to feel part of their new college community ahead of their first semester, at events hosted by alumni and others in four cities.

They had a chance to meet current St. Norbert students, alumni, staff and faculty at socials at an alum’s home in Appleton and at an outdoor concert right on campus. Rachel Gonnering ’06 (Admission) hosted a tailgate party in St. Paul and Ed Bellock ’78 hosted a reception at Itasca Country Club in Chicago.

“We had a great time,” said Jake Czarnik-Neimeyer ’77 (Alumni and Parent Relations), who entertained 60 guests. “When students and their parents left, they felt more connected to others and better prepared for the big transition. The connections they made were just fascinating. We had two guys who had played on opposing teams—they were playing in a regional high school tournament the day before!

“Parents were talking in groups based on their student’s interests and they were able to get a feel for things at St. Norbert. Current students were there and were able to talk about their own experiences.”

The Office of Admission collaborated with the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations to host the events.

The send-off receptions saw:

  • students confirming their decision to attend St. Norbert College.
  • parents being reassured by other parents about seeing their student set off for college.
  • alumni able to share the positive results of a St. Norbert education.
  • current students sharing their experiences at St. Norbert.
  • faculty and staff getting an early opportunity to meet new students, and vice versa.

Events like these serve to ease the transition to life in college, says Czarnik-Neimeyer, as well as to establish a sense of community even before students move into the campus community. As the class of 2007 arrived, many knew at least a few classmates as they got established in their new home for the next four years.
