Reunion/Homecoming Weekend 2007
October 19-21

November 2006

Old friendships and new connections made this year's reunion special

Don Smith '66 A little logging pays for get-togethers for Don Smith '66 and his old St. Norbert buddies.

The guys meet at a cabin up north, chop wood, send it home with a classmate to sell and maintain the dollars in a checking account that covers their reunions.

Hey, whatever it takes. There's nothing better than seeing old friends again, and Smith's story was just one of many circulating at this year's Reunion/Homecoming weekend festivities.

For some, the reconnections started long before the Oct. 13-15 event. Michelle Spaeth '96 was one of a committee that worked on the class of 1996's 10-year reunion. They called dozens of their classmates to encourage them to attend.

Mary Kay Flynn '66 Mary Kay (Basso) Flynn '66 says she still meets up with her College women's group, nine of whom lived together their freshman year. At this year's reunion, she found more former classmates who hope to join the group.

"I will cherish the memories and the laughter and love that we shared," she said afterwards. "I do hope we can keep up by e-mail."

George DesMarais '56 George DesMarais '56, who bore the title "Ugliest Man on Campus" when he graduated, found a different kind of honor awaiting him on his return 50 years later. Not only was he inducted as a Golden Knight, but he was afforded the privilege of bringing up the gifts at the Alumni Mass. Quite a step up, he said—and not the only surprise he was to receive this homecoming.

"On Sunday, we had the chance to walk the campus and see our old stomping grounds. The highlight for me was to get in the old dorm and see the rooms in which I spent so many hours, and relive so many memories. It was just called Residence Hall at that time. It was all-male and no females were allowed in the building except in the lobby, except mothers and sisters.

"Anyway, there are now two girls living in my room! The place has gone to the dogs!" George wrote to Shauna Baranczyk '00, assistant director of outreach in the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations.

"All kidding aside, we were grateful that we were allowed to get in any place we wanted because the helping, hospitable attitude of the staff was also demonstrated by all the students we encountered. We are all proud to have been part of the SNC experience and to meet those who, many years later, follow our footsteps. Our prayer is that their lives will be enriched as much as ours were. We owe a debt of gratitude to the College which has enabled us to live a much fuller and more meaningful life."

Revisiting former College haunts, catching up with classmates and making new friends were all part of the annual weekend of fun on campus. Skits, airbands, a 5K run—all brought together those who now or once upon a time called St. Norbert home. And the class years melted away at a pre-game tailgate party where faculty, alumni and students danced together to the music of local band Big Mouth and the Power Tool Horns.
