Laptops atop student supply list for class of 2012

iMovies, podcasts and blogs will move into school classrooms in the hands of today’s education majors, and St. Norbert faculty are making sure their students are prepared.

Beginning next fall, all incoming St. Norbert freshmen seeking teacher certification will be required to have a laptop computer that will accompany them to their student teaching experiences, as well as find constant use in their own course work.

The laptops will be used for projects like one developed recently by Allison Hoewisch (Education) that drew on the same Facebook social networking resources that her students—and their future students—are making use of in their down time. In his Psychology for Teaching course, Reid Riggle (Education) asked students to prepare a podcast on inspiring teachers.

Instructional technology specialist Krissy Lukens (Education) says, “This initiative will help ensure that students will have the necessary equipment to develop instructional technology proficiency throughout their courses, and become leaders in technology and innovation in the classroom.

In a recent interview with the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Chelsea Faase ’08 said, “Some of our education professors actually require that we make an iMovie of us teaching. We’ve actually had to post different iMovies we create of different lessons or units.”

Faase will be student teaching in Ghana next semester. The overseas program requires her to log her experiences in West Africa using an online blog.

Lukens says the laptop requirement will allow the faculty to more effectively model the methods in which technology can be used to enhance the teaching and learning process.

Michael Marsden (Academic Affairs) says, “This laptop initiative will represent one more example of how our teacher education faculty ensure that our graduates are among the best prepared teachers in the state for the modern, technologically sophisticated classrooms they will be entering as new teachers.

“This innovative development in our teacher education program is but one more example of why St. Norbert College’s graduates who are entering the teaching profession are among the best prepared in the region.”
