Four decades for college parish
St. Norbert College Parish at Old St. Joseph Church celebrates its 40th anniversary in February. The occasion will be marked with a day of activities for all age groups, including a 5 p.m. Mass.
Cocktails, dinner and dancing round out the festivities, planned for Saturday, Feb. 13.
The first college parish in the United States
When it was established in 1969, the parish at Old St. Joseph Church – designated “Church at St. Norbert College” at the time – formally became one of the first college parishes in the United States and was placed under the patronage of St. Norbert.
In the early years, agreement for the church to remain a parish had to be sought every few years. The parish was renamed several times until its permanent title, St. Norbert College Parish, was determined in 1988. After a new St. Joseph Church was built in De Pere, the campus church became known as Old St. Joe’s.
An award-winning renovation in the 1990s also saw the addition of an atrium gathering area, a parlor, an oratory and parish facilities.
Today, Old St. Joseph Church is home to 2,000 students, as well as to 380 households that celebrate active ties to the college community.
