St. Norbert vocabulary for parents

Parents, when you talk to your student, does it ever feel like he/she is speaking a totally different language? Do you find that your student uses abbreviations for everything and you are always asking them to explain what they mean?

Well, we’re here to help you conquer St. Norbert lingo, a few words at a time!

  • Independent social groups: Social organizations on campus that are a unique feature of the St. Norbert community. Women’s social organizations include BUD, CC Hams, Electric Company, No Nonsense and Untouchables. Men’s social organizations include Admar, BIG and PW Club. Social groups provide a social outlet for their members, while also performing service to the campus and local community.
  • Greek life: Nine percent of students are involved in fraternities or sororities on campus. Fraternities include Delta Upsilon, Phi Delta Theta and Tau Kappa Epsilon. Sororities on campus include Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Phi Epsilon, Epsilon Xi, Kappa Beta Gamma and Theta Phi. Greek life provides students with co-curricular and involvement opportunities, as well as the chance to participate in the traditions of their individual chapter.
  • Ugly/Queen: A feature of social life at St. Norbert College. Each year the social organizations and Greek groups choose a member of the opposite sex to represent their group. When a female group selects a male member, he becomes the group’s “ugly,” and when a male group selects a female member, she becomes the group’s “queen.”
