Faculty Highlight
When meeting Dr. Faase, one is always greeted with an enthusiastic welcome and cheery smile. Through his classes, Dr. Faase hopes students recognize that life as an adult can be hopeful and wonderful, and is meant to be filled with love for others. Similarly, he encourages students to become lifelong learners and develop a deep sense of faith, hope and love for oneself and others.
In addition to his role as professor in St. Norbert’s sociology department, Dr. Faase is also the husband of
Debra Faase (the director of field experience for the education department) and father of three, including St. Norbert education major
Chelsea Faase ’08. His advice to fellow parents of St. Norbert students is to “trust the College to be a good extended family for your sons and daughters, but also play a part in that family.” To help parents learn and connect with their students in his classes, he recommends the following books,
Ties that Stress: The New Family Imbalance by David Elkind and
The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work by Arlie Russell Hochschild.
Dr. Faase’s presence in and beyond the classroom leaves a lasting impression on many of his students. On an end-of-the semester evaluation form for his class Sex, Society and Marriage, a student remarked “you tell us all the bad things about families, but when I look at you and your family, I know that there still is hope for the American family.” Dr. Faase shows tremendous passion toward his classes and truly embodies his teaching in his own life. |
