Last year, I got to journey on one of the greatest paths of my life thus far—organizing Junior Knights and Days (JKD) an event for junior class members and their parents. I worked with extremely strong individuals to plan one of the most memorable experiences I have had at St. Norbert.
My parents are the reason I had the passion to make JKD the best it possibly could be. They have given so much to me, and I wanted to repay them with an amazing time, seeing what I go through on a day-to-day basis and meeting my College family.
When I pictured the event and imagined what both parents and the junior class could get out of the weekend, one answer came to mind: family. JKD makes it possible for students to introduce their parents to the individuals they have chosen to make a part of their lives for the past three years. That realization led our group to theme the weekend around the quote, “Sometimes the people we meet will change us forever.”
During my years as a student, the people I have met on this campus have helped me grow in a way that I will never forget. They have been a family to me, and I wanted my parents to know that I was safe and loved even if they were not there. I wanted them to meet the students, faculty and staff who have transformed me into who I am today.
I also wanted the students, faculty and staff to meet my parents, the core of my foundation as an individual. They helped me grow into an adult and allowed me to be on my own, creating “family bonds” here on campus.
With JKD we made that connection between parent and student, and I was honored to play a part in doing so. This year my sister is a junior at St. Norbert, and I am excited for my family to make the same connection with her class. I hope she cherishes it as much as I did.
I am experiencing a whirlwind of emotions about graduating in May, but I know that I have both of my families supporting me every step of the way. They have helped me be ready for the next chapter in my life. In the end, I know that the people I have met here at St. Norbert have truly changed my life forever.
