St. Norbert Campus Safety had a different look when students returned to campus on Aug. 25, 2008. Previously, our office consisted of two professionals, supplemented by a staff of St. Norbert students. In April 2008, I was hired as director of campus safety to take the department in a new direction. Prior to my arrival at St. Norbert, I spent 27 years in public safety, retiring as commander from the Ashwaubenon Department of Public Safety. With my background, I encourage a “protect and serve” attitude for the Campus Safety staff.

During the summer three additional professionals were hired and trained for improved response to incidents around campus. Having more professionals also helps us be proactive rather than reactive. We’ve increased our emphasis on high visibility and accessibility to the campus community via foot patrol and bike patrol. Campus Safety officers are also now uniformed to enhance visibility and reinforce the college’s commitment to a professional staff.

Campus Safety has also enhanced its student employment opportunities—we’re assisted by a staff of 10 student officers and dispatchers. These students do an excellent job and fill the gaps to allow our office to be a 24/7 operation.

The St. Norbert Campus Safety office has a close working relationship with the De Pere Police and Fire Departments. With the new professional staff, and this relationship, Campus Safety is intent on achieving its top priority—the safety of the students, faculty and staff at St. Norbert College.
