Summer 2008
Welcome from Leadership Development, Service & Engagement (LSE)
by Pat Bier '09, LSE intern
The office of Leadership Development, Service & Engagement (LSE) hosts a Week of Welcome (WOW) every August to give new students a chance to adjust to life at St. Norbert College before their lives become filled with classes and extracurriculars. This year’s WOW begins Thursday, Aug. 21, a day before upperclass students move in. (A complete WOW schedule can be found on the LSE
LSE web site.)
The start of WOW coincides with the day first-year students can move into residence halls. Students can move in between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., and First Year Experience (FYE) mentors will be present to help direct traffic and assist students into their new homes. All offices on campus will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and a comedy show will be held that night at the Campus Center. A team of peer mentors will conduct FYE meetings throughout the next few days to help new students become acquainted with the campus and all the services available to them. A Convocation for the class of 2012 will be held in front of Main Hall on Sunday, Aug. 24, followed by a campus-wide picnic, complete with live music and fireworks.
Classes begin the following day, but programs to learn about St. Norbert continue for incoming students. A job fair displaying the part-time jobs available for students on campus will take place Wednesday, Aug. 27, and an Involvement Fair on Sept. 9 will give students a chance to see what groups are available for them to join. These groups include, but are not limited to, academic clubs (geology, math, etc.), intramurals (crew, lacrosse, etc.), service (TRIPS, MC3, etc.), and social organizations (Greek life and independent groups).
All new students are highly encouraged to attend every session offered during WOW to get a better understanding of how St. Norbert works and become involved with the happenings at their new home.
