When I was in high school, my dream was to become a nurse. Unfortunately, St. Norbert did not have a nursing program at the time, nor did my parents feel that they could afford a private school, so I frequently visited my classmates that attended St. Norbert instead. I remember staying in VMC and thinking how lucky my friends were to be able to attend St. Norbert College. When my oldest daughter, Sarah, was in kindergarten, I told her she would be going to St. Norbert. All through her schooling she told me, “No, it was too close to home and too small!”
When her junior year in high school came about, we did our college visits with my occasional plug for SNC. We journeyed around Wisconsin and went as far as Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. I could not fathom my daughter so far away, but I left it up to her. She knew her dad and I would support her with whatever decision she made.
Now comes the surprising part, not only did she choose St. Norbert (Class of ’07), but her brother, Matt (Class of ’09), and her sister, Molly (Class of ’11), also decided to attend SNC.
By the way, our last name of Muenster gave our children their SNC nicknames: Big Cheese, Cheese and Baby Cheese, respectively. All three have worked in Res Life (now REH) as resident assistants (RA), and have utilized their leadership abilities far beyond what I could imagine.
Matt, now approaching graduation, will have some truly astounding memories of SNC. While performing well academically, he has been a member of the St. Norbert Chamber Choir and starred in GODSPELL his freshman year. He has participated in T.R.I.P.S. each year, going to Philadelphia his freshman year, Washington, D.C., his sophomore year and to Little Rock, Ark., his junior year after returning from England and a semester abroad. His senior year he was a T.R.I.P.S. leader and traveled to Mexico. During the Philadelphia trip, he met and formed an everlasting friendship with Father Sal [Cuccia] (Fr. Sal even had Matt try on a Norbertine robe, hoping for a new recruit). As a student at SNC, Matt has enjoyed traveling and seeing other cultures. He has enjoyed giving back to the community, which hopefully will continue through his lifetime.
Matt has served as a lecturer at Old St. Joe’s for the past three years, and has served on numerous committees, including Junior Knights and Days, which was a memorable weekend for his father and me. He has been an RA since his sophomore year and is assistant hall director of MMM this year. His father and I are grateful for the opportunities he has had at St. Norbert College and know they will serve him well in the future.
I knew St. Norbert was a GREAT school, but what I didn’t know was what a GREAT fit it was for my family. I will be ever grateful to the staff and educators that contributed to my children’s educations.
