Academic Support Services

by Leah Larson ′14

As a senior in college, I can attest to the many differences between high school and college classes, how I am expected to study for those classes, and how I need to prepare for finals. Similar to many other students, in high school I rarely studied for my finals; once I enrolled in college classes, though, I quickly realized that my old methods just weren’t going to cut it. I had to learn how to study all over again, and that can be a stressful and sometimes overwhelming experience when you are trying to keep up with classes, clubs, work and other commitments.

For my entire first semester of college, I was unaware that there was a place I could go to get help. But then I became employed at Academic Support Services during the second semester of my freshman year, and I have seen how this office has helped so many different students with varying degrees of need through the years.

I think sometimes people view Academic Support Services as a place only for people really struggling in their classes, but this office has resources for everyone. Students can meet face-to-face with one of our staff members to develop better studying and time management strategies, arrange for a tutor, discuss accommodations on exams for special needs, or get help with any number of other academic issues, large or small. The entire Academic Support Services team is dedicated to helping students become more confident and successful in their academic work.

Conversely, if your student is a strong performer academically, Academic Support Services is always looking for tutors. If your student is an academic “star,” and would like to help others succeed as well, encourage him or her to contact our office!

Academic Support Services office hours are Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. We are located on the top floor of Todd Wehr Hall; our office phone is 920-403-1321. For additional information, students can also check out our homepage on the St. Norbert website: www.snc.edu/academicsupport.
