Children in Armed Conflict: the Case of Northern Uganda
A lecture on child soldiers by Victor Ochen, Director and Founder of the African Youth Initiative Network. This event in honor of Human Rights Day (December 10) will be co-sponsored by the SNC Peace and Justice Center, the SNC Center for International Education and the Center for Global Health and Peacebuilding.
This is the week of the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. Is humankind doing enough to protect the rights of
children? Is it doing enough to improve their plight particularly during
armed conflict and its aftermath? For almost a generation the youth of
northern Uganda had to endure unspeakable violence that included
torture, enslavement and the brainwashing of children into soldiers. The
war may be over but the healing of the
scars it left behind has just begun. Victor Ochen, a charismatic youth
leader who lost a brother to abduction, has been at the forefront of
helping victims rebuild their young but shattered lives.
