Sr. Sally Ann Brickner is being honored by St. Norbert
College with the 2010 St. Norbert Ambassador of Peace Award. She is also being
honored by the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies with the 2010
Dick Ringler Distinguished Educator Award.
A native of Milwaukee and a graduate of St. Norbert College,
Sr. Sally Ann completed her master’s and doctoral degrees in Education at
Michigan State University. She later received another masters degree from
Columbia University’s Teachers College. She returned to SNC as part of the
Education faculty in 1970, and she directed that discipline from 1982 to 1984.
She chaired the Social Science Division from 1984 to 1989, then served as St.
Norbert’s first Associate Academic Dean, holding the position from 1989 to
1995. In 2001, Sr. Sally Ann became Director of the Peace and Justice Center,
serving there until 2009. Always a student, she spent a sabbatical year at the
Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of
Notre Dame, and she completed courses in St. Norbert’s Master of Theological Studies
Program.
Sr. Sally Ann contributed significantly to the formation and
success of the Peace and Justice minor at St. Norbert College. Through her
diligence in teaching and in leading the programs of the Peace and Justice
Center, she helped form the social conscience of our students for decades. It
is no exaggeration to say that her incalculable impact will endure through
students who continue to serve the common good in communities around the world.
After the 2009-10 school year, Sr. Sally Ann retired from St.
Norbert College, having served on the faculty for 40 years. This summer she
also celebrated her 50th year as a member of the religious congregation of the
Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross. She has served her community as a
council member and as President (1997-2001). She currently serves as Vice
President.
