About Philippine Studies at St. Norbert College
The study of the Philippines prepares students to understand the society and culture of the Philippines, a developing country that has close political, economic and cultural ties with the U.S. ever since it was a U.S. colony from 1898 to 1946. The Philippines has a population of about 85 million and about 90% of them are Catholics, making it the largest Catholic country in Asia.
The Philippine Studies Certificate Program provides non-Filipino American students an opportunity to learn about the Philippines and develop a better understanding of the Filipino American community while allowing Filipino American students the opportunity to explore their heritage. The program helps students achieve a core value of the college, namely to “build an international learning community rooted in Christian ideals where persons of all faiths and beliefs are valued contributing partners.”
Why study the Philippines?
The Philippine Studies certificate program aims to educate students on the Philippines, a developing country that is predominantly Catholic and has close ties with the United States politically, economically and culturally. It will help Filipino American students explore their heritage, make Filipino culture known to students of other backgrounds and the wider public and help internationalize the curriculum.
The certificate program will also offer a valuable opportunity for non-Filipino American students to learn about a major ethnic minority in the United States. There are about three million Filipino Americans residing in the U.S., making them the second-largest Asian American group. The program will expose students to the Philippine culture as well as the heritage and tradition of Filipino Americans.
