Philosophy awards and scholarships The Thomas Phelan and James Regan Award for Excellence in Philosophy Thomas W. Phelan and James T. Regan both began their teaching careers at St. Norbert College in the early 1950s and continued here until their retirements in the late 1980s. Together they taught at the College a total of 75 years. Both were graduates of the rigorous program in philosophy at St. Louis University and carried its high standards into the classroom and hallways of St. Norbert. As laypersons joining a faculty that was largely Norbertine, they were pioneers in the faculty's transformation to the predominantly lay group it is today. And during this critical transition, they helped the College preserve its Norbertine character. Through the 1960s, professors Phelan and Regan taught the full range of philosophy courses based on the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas that were required of all St. Norbert students. As the philosophy requirements changed with the Catholic Church's renewal initiated by the Second Vatican Council, Professors Phelan and Regan pursued additional research and teaching interests. For professor Phelan, these included ancient Greek philosophy and aesthetics. For professor Regan, Asian philosophy and business ethics. Each received the Leonard Ledvina Outstanding Teacher Award in recognition of distinguished service in the classroom. These two men contributed greatly to the spirit of community that characterizes the College. Their kindness, concern for others and warm hospitality embodied the fundamental Norbertine values on which the College is founded. Professors Phelan and Regan were men of profound humanism and of the highest intellectual and moral commitment. This award is given to a graduating philosophy student whose college career has begun to exemplify these qualities. James D. Madden Scholarship
