The philosophy faculty accomplishments

The faculty in philosophy at St. Norbert is made up of a seasoned group of teacher/scholars committed to excellence in every area of academics. In particular, we are dedicated to the practice of rigorous yet accessible philosophical inquiry, to the promotion of the unity and coherence of knowledge and to philosophy as a vehicle for self-clarification and self-discovery. Our areas of philosophical expertise are varied but intersect at crucial points, especially in relation to the three items discussed above.

Our scholarly research and professional agendas come into connection with our teaching mission in concrete ways, including:
  • textbook publishing
  • electronic databases
  • work on the nature of consciousness and the self
  • work on the relation of religion and science
  • translating non-English texts for availability to students and others
  • research in areas of medical ethics involving health care, end of life issues and stem cell research
  • serving on a medical ethics hospital board
  • scholarly work in the philosophy of human rights and just war theory
In other words, neither is our scholarship abstracted from the content of our teaching nor does it determine the form and content of our courses without consideration for relevance and accessibility to students.

In addition, the Philosophy faculty is engaged in interdisciplinary teaching in a variety of courses, some of which are cross-listed with other disciplines at the College, including Religious Studies and Classical Studies.

Finally, our faculty members are a strong presence in the life of the College, serving on a variety of important committees and taking on important collegial duties such as faculty chair (two members) and for eight years chairing the speakers program of the endowed Killeen Chair of Theology and Philosophy (four members). The Killeen Chair programs not only offer important intellectual enrichment for students, faculty and members of the local community, but also serve as an important vehicle for collaboration between the disciplines of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
