Professional profile
My primary areas of research are philosophy of religion and nineteenth and twentieth century Continental philosophy. In my research, I use existentialism and phenomenology as interpretive tools to offer insight into the meaning and nature of religion and religious language. Accordingly, my research in the philosophy of religion veers away from approaches to religion that focus on metaphysical questions and instead asks how religious language expresses and responds to the human experience of meaninglessness and absurdity.
As an instructor of philosophy, I focus on teaching my students to become Socratic questioners. By encouraging them to follow the Socratic example of critical inquiry, I hope to teach my students, intro students and majors alike, to philosophize for themselves even as they learn about what philosophers have already said. |
