Jim Purtill is in his 8th year as the head football coach at St. Norbert College. Purtill has raised the standard of play in the Midwest Conference during his seven-year tenure, going 58-3 in MWC games and 64-11 overall. The Green Knights have won six league championships and qualified for the NCAA Division III Playoffs five times under his watch.
Purtill spent four years at Albion, which is the 4th winningest Division III program in the 1990's, compiling a 31-7 record in his four seasons as offensive coordinator.
The Kent, Ohio native also spent seven seasons as the offensive line coach at Ferris State University (Mich.), five years as the freshman coach at Cornell University (N.Y.) and two years as defensive backs coach.
Purtill arrived at Albion following the Britons' 1994 Division III National Championship season. He instilled a multiple I-offense attack, which averaged national-bests 538 total yards and 50.8 points per game in 1996.
He is also noted for his versatility on offense between rushing and passing. During the 1996 season, Albion rushed for 251.3 yards and passed for 286.7 yards per game.
In 1998, the Britons finished 8-2 and won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title. Albion suffered two of its losses to undefeated national champion Mount Union (Ohio) 38-24 in the regular season and 21-19 in the first round of the Division III playoffs.
Albion, which is the alma mater and same school where former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur began his assistant coaching career, averaged 400.2 total yards per game last season, including 188.6 yards rushing and 214.2 yards passing.
Purtill graduated with a bachelor's degree in comprehensive social studies from Miami University (Ohio) in 1978. He completed a master's degree in physical education from Salem College (W. Va.) in 1995. |
