High school preparation for physics Students intending to major in physics should take 4 years of high school mathematics (including a calculus course) so that they are ready to take a calculus-based introductory physics course and continue the study of calculus when they enter college. They should also take as many years of laboratory science as their high school is able to offer. A year each of biology, chemistry and physics is desirable. Some high schools are able to offer advanced courses in physics or chemistry, and these should be taken if possible. Graduate study in physics toward a Ph.D. degree often requires a reading knowledge of a modern foreign language, usually German, French or Russian. If at all possible, foreign language study should begin in high school. Four years of study of a single language would be desirable. - |
