2011 SNC United Nations Seminar-Geneva

Summer Session I - 2011

Description
Since 1996, students from St. Norbert College have participated in this 4-credit program at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City. In 2011, the program will take place at the UN Office in Geneva.

Students will be have three meetings with the Director of the UN Seminar during the Spring semester. They will also have assignments due on Moodle. Then from May 22-June 2, 2011 students will travel to Geneva, Switzerland to learn about the United Nations in World politics at the UN Office in Geneva. In Geneva, students will attend regular briefings and conduct personal interviews with mission diplomats and UN organization staff members. Students will also have the opportunity to visit several NGO’s and visit the beautiful city of Geneva.  

Academic Content
The program provides students with an understanding of the role, impact, and significance of the United Nations in world politics. Students will be exposed to the role international organizations, norms and regimes that provide the operating structure for the UN and the importance of global power relationships within the organization. Students will discuss theoretical framework of the U.N. before moving on to examine more substantive issues related to the working of the United Nations and its various agencies.

With guidance from the program director, students design a program of independent research.  Research papers are due on Tuesday, June 7, 2011.

Academic Course Credit  
POLI 450 (4 credits) – United Nations in World Politics.
This course discusses the role, impact and significance of the United Nations in the international system. Students are provided with various theoretical approaches for understanding the role of international organizations in world politics. They are also exposed to a series of substantive issues discussed within the UN system including peacekeeping, terrorism, arms control, human rights and economic development.

Eligibility Requirements
A minimum 3.0 GPA is required (4.0 scale). Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors may apply provided they have completed Introduction to International Studies (POLI150) or its equivalent.  Some research experience is necessary for the course.  

Non-Academic Information
We will be leaving from Chicago on May 22, 2011 and arriving to Geneva on May 23, 2011. We will be leaving Geneva on June 2, 2011 and arriving into Chicago on June 3, 2011.

While in Geneva we will be staying in youth hostels. Breakfast will be included in most cases. However students are responsible for lunch and dinner and any additional meals that are not covered by hostels. We expect that students will spend between $500-$600 on meals and personal expenses. This amount may vary according to each individual personal expenses.

Costs of the Program
Approx. UN Summer Seminar Program Fee 2011:  $3800

This includes tuition, lodging, airfare, UN Tour and ID, entrance fees, and administration in De Pere and Geneva. This fee does not include meals and personal expenses.

A deposit of $1200 is due on January 5, 2011 the balance of $2600 is due on January 17, 2011. Since all airline tickets and lodging is paid for ahead of time, no refunds will be given after the deposit has been made.

Students must have a valid passport to participate in this program. In addition, some international students might require a visa to participate.
