What can I do with a degree in political science?
Although emphasizing the study of political science as a liberal art, the program does not overlook its importance in the preparation for a variety of careers. A major in political science prepares students for graduate study and research, for professional careers in business, law, government or public administration, for active participation in local, state and national politics and for living effective lives as members of a democratic society in a diverse and complex world.
At St. Norbert College, our course work, the development of analytical and writing, research and quantitative skills and the opportunity to incorporate "hands on" experience in a variety of internships will prepare our political science majors for a wide range of career paths, such as:
Public and international affairs:
Our graduates are active in administration of government, both national and state/local, political campaigns and companies which interact with government agencies and/or are involved with international trade.
Teaching:
Many political science majors are in all levels of education, but particularly secondary and higher education, including educational administration.
Law:
Numerous students interested in law as a career choose political science as an undergraduate major. Surveys of St. Norbert College graduates reveal that this is a very popular career choice for our majors, and many of them are now practicing law or have brought their law degrees to their work for the government.
Business:
Career choices for St. Norbert College graduates in political science also include banking, investments, marketing, sales and international business in the U.S. and abroad.
Journalism:
Political science majors can combine their interests in politics and the writing skills we emphasize at St. Norbert to prepare for a career in journalism.
Research and graduate school:
Many career options are enhanced by further study, and we feel that St. Norbert political science students have been well prepared for this choice. They will have the quantitative, methodological and analytical skills necessary to be successful in graduate school. Adviser: David Wegge |
