A note about confidentiality The LGBTQ Ally Mentors value your right to privacy and your right to decide your own degree of self-disclosure. All communications with LGBTQ Ally Mentors though one of these methods are held to be confidential, unless you become a danger to yourself or others, or if we are required by law to make a disclosure. If the context in which you're communicating with a Mentor doesn't make it obvious that the conversation is confidential (for instance, if you chat with a mentor while walking to class or via personal phone or personal email), you are welcome to remind the mentor of your confidentiality request. So that we can evaluate our programs and our training, LGBTQ Ally Mentors may discuss communications with each other, but never outside of the small group of student LGBTQ Ally Mentors and never in a setting where your confidentiality may be breached easily (cafeteria, etc). If you fill out an evaluation after your contact with a mentor, that will also be held confidential within the group of mentors. If you need to keep a particular communication confidential and limited to just the mentor you spoke with, please mention this and make sure the mentor makes a note of it. Signing the LGBTQ Ally Pledge is a public statement, so unless you tell us otherwise, we may release your name (and to a limited campus audience, email) to help members of our community find certified Allies. Some communication technology, such as email or instant messenger, can provide you with convenient access to LGBTQ Ally Mentors but might expose you to theoretical confidentiality risks beyond our control. |
